Electric boating, how much CO2 reduction can you achieve?

Aktualisiert: 4. Juli 2023

New Year' resolutions, at the start of a new year, everyone is talking about it, do you have them? We ask ourselves, what will be our green resolution for 2021? Our family business Natural Yachts is known for its zero emission line Northman yachts. Next year we add two new electric yachts to our charter- and experience fleet, bringing our total to three electric yachts. How much CO2 reduction does this represent? This blog will explain much CO2 we reduce with these three electric Northman yachts.

Green resolutions

Natural Yachts adds two new yachts to its charter- and experience fleet in 2021. Our flagship, the Northman 1200 Electric, a 12 metre yacht for 6 persons, and the elegant and sporty Nexus Revo 870 Hardtop Electric, an 8-metre yacht for 4 persons. Both yachts are equipped with a zero emission propulsion system which leads to a CO2 reduction. Due to the fact that the Nexus Revo 870 Cabrio Electric was already added to the charter fleet last year, we will have a total of three 100% electric yachts in 2021.

Northman 1200 Electric The Northman 1200 is a 2.26 m long and 3.50 m wide motor yacht with a high level of comfort. This yacht has 3 double cabins and 2 bathrooms, each with a shower and toilet. The yacht is very suitable for a comfortable and also sustainable stay on the water for 6 persons.

Not only the design of this yacht is comfortable, the electric drive line provides the ultimate experience on the water, as you can boat in silence and without emissions!

Northman Nexus Revo 870 Electric The Northman Nexus Revo 870 is a motorboat for 4 persons. Despite its size, of 8.70 m and a width of 2.90 m, the boat offers great comfort and space. The Northman Nexus Revo 870 is available in two versions, a convertible which can be used flexibly to fully enjoy the outdoors and a hardtop version. The hardtop version has been selected for the new Nexus Revo 870 Electric which will be added to the fleet in 2021. On the hardtop, solar panels are installed to recharge the batteries, making a longer stay in nature possible.

CO2 reduction In order to determine the CO2 reduction to be achieved by the Nexus Revo 870 Cabrio Electric, the Nexus Revo 870 Hardtop Electric and the Northman 1200 Electric, a comparison has been made with similar small vessels with an average consumption of 3.28 (8 metres) to 5.48 (12 metres) litres of diesel per hour. This is based on 30.5 boating hours per week in combination with 12 generator hours (approximately 2 litres of diesel per hour) and 25 weeks that the yachts are operational in the charter and experience centre. This leads to a reduction of almost 11,000 litres of diesel per year and a reduction in CO2 emissions of over 35 tonnes per year. Generally speaking, this corresponds to over 250,000 car kilometres at 120.5 grams of CO2 per kilometre (average emissions from the European car park).

Conclusion The 3 electric Northman yachts which will be part of Natural Yachts' charter and experience fleet by 2021 will result in a significant CO2 reduction of over 35 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, which is more than the equivalent of 250,000 car kilometres at 120.5 grams of CO2 per kilometre.
